Exciting new journeys

Hello and welcome to 790 - a class of questions, comments, thinking, answers, and sharing. I am so excited to be apart of this stage of your journey toward becoming a professional teacher. We will have a full, but hopefully, meaningful 17 days ahead of us.
If you feel like commenting today, perhaps you would like to comment on what you might want to do differently when you teach, than what you experienced...

Good point Anna! It's true I would hope that most teachers start off as enthusiastic and excited to make a difference in kids' lives. And it's hard to judge the teachers that you or I might feel as mediocre or bad because to each there own. Right!?! It's essential to just be yourself, be honest and trustworthy, give advice when needed and have patience. Amother thing that is important to remember is that NOT everyone (or every student in this case) is going to like you and it's important to respect that and not to be discouraged because it will happen. To make a difference in even one life is a life well lived! Good luck!

There are many things I would like to do differently than my teachers did - and many things I will do that are similar.
I think one of the most exciting options is to bring popular culture into the classroom as much as possible, and to allow students to use what they know to further their learning.
I hope that I can encourage the innate creativity in my students by using creative ways of presenting material and by including non-traditional assignments.
I agree with Drew and Anna in that I believe the students deserve respect, are capable of much more, and respond to honesty. My favourite teachers were people I identified with because they had likeable, human qualities.
A hearty laugh goes a long way.
Rambling, I am.
See you tomorrow.

I agree about being yourself. I think that the best teachers I ever had were authentic. At least if you are not the person they really want you to be you can't really fake it. I have been thinking more about what I can work on to be a better when I'm a teacher that could reach more students. My own learning experience was pretty wonderful and I felt that I had great teachers, but other people may not have felt that way. I've learned from this program so far how diverse everyone's learning experience has been and its shown me that flexibilty is going to be key so I am definately going to practice that. I'm concerned about adapting when what I am doing is great for some students but other students are the opposite? How do you solve that when its your personality and your approach that's the problem? Also I think that my teachers in high school had a lot of discussion amongst themselves about how to deal with everyday situations in the classroom and I hope to be a part of and help develop a supportive faculty in my future school like that.

For me, education is so much more than just sitting in a classroom and listening in order to eventually repeat what was said. One of the biggest things that was lackin in my educational experience was the lack of promotion of critical thought about what was being taught. I hope to help students in undersanding why what I'm teaching is important and to ask questions about the information, rather than just accepting it as being "just the way it is".
